APOSTILLE FOR YOUR RCMP CERTIFICATE: MARRIAGE IN MOROCCO

Preparing foreign paperwork for an international wedding can quickly become overwhelming, especially when federal processing times are long.

If you are a Canadian citizen getting married in Morocco (in cities like Agadir, Tangier, Casablanca or Rabat), Moroccan authorities will usually ask for specific Canadian documents before approving the marriage. These commonly include a recent RCMP criminal record check and a statutory declaration of single status.

Crown Seal Notary provides in-person document notarization for clients across Hamilton and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), with in-office and mobile appointments.

Please note: Crown Seal Notary is an independent notary public, not a government agency. We do not obtain RCMP criminal record checks or issue any government documents. You request your RCMP certificate yourself through an accredited fingerprinting agency; we notarize your documents and can forward them to the official authority for the apostille.

REQUIRED CANADIAN DOCUMENTS FOR MARRIAGE IN MOROCCO

Before booking your notarization appointment, confirm the exact documents the Moroccan authorities handling your file require. Requirements can vary by city and can change, so always check with the court or the Embassy of Canada to Morocco.

  • Fingerprint-based RCMP criminal record check: You visit an accredited fingerprinting company, which submits your fingerprints to the RCMP. The RCMP then issues your certified criminal record check. Local police checks, name-based checks and older certificates are often not accepted, so confirm how recent your check must be.
  • Statutory declaration of single status: Ontario does not issue a standard “single status certificate”, so many people make a statutory declaration confirming that they are not married and are free to marry.
SUPPORTING FINANCIAL & STATUS DOCUMENTS
  • Proof of income and employment letter: A signed letter from your employer stating your job title, start date and salary, often with recent pay stubs.
  • Divorce certificate or death certificate: Required if you were previously married, to show that any earlier marriage has ended.
REQUIREMENTS COMPLETED IN MOROCCO
  • Documents from the Embassy of Canada: Moroccan authorities may also ask for documents issued through the Embassy of Canada in Rabat, such as a statement about your capacity to marry and proof of Canadian nationality. Check the embassy’s current requirements and appointment process.
  • Certificate of conversion to Islam: Under Moroccan law, a non-Muslim man marrying a Muslim woman must convert to Islam; the certificate is obtained in Morocco.
  • Medical certificate: Issued by a licensed doctor in Morocco before filing.
  • Sworn translations: Canadian documents usually must be translated by a sworn translator in Morocco into the language the court requires.

HOW TO AVOID GLOBAL AFFAIRS CANADA (GAC) DELAYS

Federal documents such as an RCMP certificate are normally authenticated by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) in Ottawa, and processing times there can be long. Some clients instead use a notarized document prepared in Ontario, which can be apostilled by the province:

Step 1 — Document review and notarization: Bring your original RCMP certificate and your single status declaration to Crown Seal Notary for an in-person appointment, in our office or through a mobile visit. We prepare the notarial certificate, for example a notarized true copy of your RCMP certificate.

Step 2 — Provincial apostille through ODS: Because the document now carries an Ontario notary’s signature and seal, it can be submitted to Ontario’s Official Documents Services (ODS) in Toronto. ODS confirms the notary’s appointment and issues an apostille for the notary’s signature. Provincial processing is often faster than federal processing, but times vary.

Step 3 — Confirm it is accepted: An apostille on a notarized document authenticates the notary’s signature, not the RCMP record itself. Before relying on this route, confirm with the Moroccan court or the Embassy of Canada that this format is accepted for your file.

TRANSLATION & EMBASSY PROCEDURES IN MOROCCO

Canada and Morocco are both parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille issued in Ontario is generally accepted in Morocco without further embassy legalization.

  • Translation in Morocco: Moroccan courts require documents in the language they work in, usually Arabic. Once your documents carry the apostille, a sworn translator (traducteur assermenté) in Morocco can translate the RCMP check, the notarial certificate and the apostille together as one file.
  • Embassy of Canada in Rabat: If Moroccan authorities ask for documents issued through the embassy, bring your apostilled documents and your Canadian passport to your embassy appointment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is my local police background check rejected by Moroccan courts?
Moroccan authorities generally ask for a fingerprint-based criminal record check issued by the RCMP. Local police checks and name-based checks from other providers are often not accepted for marriage files, so confirm the requirement with the office handling your file.
Can an RCMP background check be apostilled online?
No. Documents for use outside Canada must be notarized in person; Ontario does not authenticate documents that were notarized remotely. Plan an in-person appointment, in our office or through a mobile visit, for your RCMP package and your single status declaration.
Does Morocco accept the Ontario ODS Apostille?
Yes. Canada and Morocco are both parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille issued by Ontario's Official Documents Services (ODS) is generally recognized in Morocco. Confirm with the office handling your file that it accepts the specific document format you plan to use.
How old can my RCMP check be for marriage in Morocco?
Moroccan authorities generally expect recent documents, often issued within about three to six months of your filing date. Check the exact validity period with the court or office handling your marriage file before you apply.
Where should I translate my apostilled documents into French or Arabic?
If you translate in Morocco, have the translation done after the apostille is issued, so a sworn translator (traducteur assermenté) can translate the RCMP check, the notarial certificate and the apostille together. If you plan to translate in Canada first, confirm with the Moroccan authorities whether they will accept that translation and how it must be authenticated.
