Hamilton is a multilingual city, and many of our clients speak English as a second language. That’s no barrier to getting your documents commissioned, but there is one essential rule: you must understand what you are signing.

Why understanding matters

When you swear an affidavit or make a statutory declaration, you confirm that its contents are true. A commissioner cannot properly administer that oath or declaration if you don’t understand the document. That protects you and the people who rely on your statement.

Documents written in another language

If your document is in a language you read fluently, that can often work, but check the receiving organization’s requirements. Many Canadian organizations require documents in English or French, or require a certified translation.

Using an interpreter

If you don’t read the document’s language well enough, you may need an interpreter at the appointment. In many cases, the interpreter swears or declares that they have accurately interpreted the document to you. Contact us before booking so we can discuss what’s required.

Translations

If you need a document translated for submission, the translator may be asked to swear an affidavit of translation confirming its accuracy. Our post on affidavits of translation explains the process, and our free template can help.

Before you book

  • Tell us which language(s) are involved.
  • Arrange an interpreter or translator if needed.
  • Bring valid photo ID for everyone signing, including the interpreter.
