Power of Attorney Witnessing
Signing a Continuing Power of Attorney for Property or a Power of Attorney for Personal Care in Ontario? Crown Seal Notary can notarize your documents, arrange the two witnesses Ontario requires, and prepare notarized copies for your bank or care home.
We work from our Hamilton office 7 days a week, and our mobile notary can come to your home, hospital, retirement home or long-term care home across Hamilton and the GTA. We do not draft powers of attorney: use the free Ontario Power of Attorney kit, or speak with a lawyer if your situation is complex.
How a Power of Attorney Is Signed in Ontario
Under Ontario’s Substitute Decisions Act, 1992, you sign your power of attorney in front of two witnesses, who watch you sign and then sign it themselves. Your spouse or partner, your child, the people you are naming as attorneys (and their spouses or partners), and anyone under 18 cannot be witnesses. We can arrange qualified witnesses for you when you book ahead.
Our power of attorney services include:
- Notarizing your Continuing Power of Attorney for Property and Power of Attorney for Personal Care.
- Two qualified, independent witnesses arranged by us when you book ahead.
- Copies of your signed POA certified for banks, care homes and other institutions.
- Signings at homes, hospitals, retirement and long-term care homes across Hamilton and the GTA.
- Step-by-step help with the official Ontario POA kit on our Templates page.

Witnesses: $30 per witness, arranged by us when you book ahead

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a lawyer to make a power of attorney?
Not always. Ontario publishes a free Power of Attorney kit that you can complete yourself. If your affairs are complex, or the person signing may not fully understand the document, speak with a lawyer first. We do not draft powers of attorney.
Who cannot be a witness?
Your spouse or partner, your child or someone you treat as your child, the people you are naming as attorneys and their spouses or partners, anyone under 18, and anyone who has a guardian of property or of the person.
Can you provide the witnesses?
Yes. We arrange qualified witnesses at $30 per witness when you book ahead. Tell us how many witnesses you need when you book.
Can you come to a hospital or care home?
Yes. Our mobile notary visits homes, hospitals, retirement homes and long-term care homes. A travel fee applies based on distance. Call or text 289-207-0851 for a custom quote.
What should I bring?
Your completed but unsigned POA forms and valid government-issued photo ID for the person signing. If you bring your own witnesses, they need photo ID too.
